House of the Musician
graduation project
2020 - While designing the house of the musician I used instrumental music as my primary source. In this form of art the individual experience of the listener takes centre stage. When listening to this music, emotions are called upon and a personal story is created. While your surroundings stay the same, you feel like you transcend into another world.
Architecture is mostly seen as pure functional and aesthetic. In my designs I want you to experience more than that. Just like music, spaces have to evoke emotions. The house of the musician shows what architecture can really tell you.
As I was designing I made use of my own musicality. Making music created a mental space which surrounded me. Listening to music made me visualise colours and shapes. By using those, the house of the musician portrays the spatial sensation and the feelings of music.
This is how I reach people with my interpretation of music. Not with concerts or performances, but through my architecture.
